The two dozen species are, nearly to an individual, long bodied and bicolored. Icterus galbula is a handsome bird, to be sure. I will broker no argument to the contrary. There is no doubt about it, this is a striking bird. Birds orioles' But that would be incorrect. Take a look at this sucker.

One of the more exciting birds this summer in this little corner of North Carolina is undoubtedly the King Rail s that have been regularly reported in a still-water back-arm of Jordan Lake in Chatham County, just south of where I live. For me, King Rail resides in life bird limbo. The two species I’ve heard but never seen.

My personal list for Safa Park runs to 40+, but upwards of 200 species have been recorded here over the years.
