In port, the local rehabilitators thought it would be best for her to treated closer to her home, at a facility dedicated to aquatic birds. I happened to work at that facility, for International Bird Rescue at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center , part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

The Nature Center worker brought down pliers and Eric gave the bird to Lisa to hold as he examined the situation. One of them had to be injured, possibly killed. It didn’t take long to come up with an answer, especially as the bird was not very happy and the mussel didn’t articulate an opinion.

This represents 6% of the estimated mid-continental spring population of 322,700 birds for the same two decades. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. What about all the other birds that die from inexperience, disease, natural predation and accidents? Tennessee found that out in January.

No human can divine what a mated pair of geese or eagles may feel for one another, but stories abound of birds,especially Canada Geese , who spurned all offers from members of the opposite sex for years after a mate was killed. The birds had roosted together each night in a single soft clump of feathers.
