As with any patch, wildlife refuge or other birding locale, that birding gold can also be minted in the form of a rare and unexpected vagrant. Not that it one could expect to see one in Costa Rica but could the species be annual? Focus on birds in the southern Pacific region and treasure might be a Turquoise Cotinga.

She also had amazing stories of birding in Belize and Costa Rica, and we swapped favorite birding tales during the 2.5 No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species. hours of walking. The property is generally closed to the public, but tours are available.

The Poor Knights certainly lived up to their reputation, and to my mind are arguably an essential stop on a visit to New Zealand, even if you only came looking for wildlife of the feathered kind.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.
