However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. The beavers agreed. It’s the only Dutch eagle.

Jumping out of my “Beat” today

This trip was actually all about photographing the grizzly bears the inhabit the Katmai National Forest, I will not bore you with the flight details, from La Paz, Mexico to Alaska, but it included several planes, one of which was a De Havilland Beaver float plane. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. As I walked along the trails, and water control dikes, I got to enjoy birds just about everywhere. Now that is a first.
