The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act. The refuge is already open to sport fishing.

The clay consumed at the colpa contains chemicals that bind with these ingested alkaloids thus neutralizing their toxicity.
