The wildlife center was an hour away if I was lucky. It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. I’d rescued birds before, but this time I had to face the wildlife center with a personal connection to the carnage. I was mortified.
