I’ve tackled Texas, collected in California, fooled around in Florida. The Anchorage area hosts a number of far norther species I could never hope to see in North Carolina, and I quickly pulled together a list of targets and my friends made a plan. Where bears are loose and grouse wander around with impunity.

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The grand total is 817 species! SPECIES ACCOUNTS.

We share some plant options with southern California, and others with Florida. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. And it bears for more than half the year! Mine are mostly cutting-collected natives.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Service also proposes expanding hunting and sport fishing on the following refuges: California.
