The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead). Cows and water buffaloes grazing the dried up lakebed under the imposing shadow of Mt. I opt for the bird richest section of the lake, visible from the eastern dyke.

The IOC world birdlist recognizes 90 species that bear the name “weaver” or “malimbe” Not all of these are true weavers as we will discuss below. A typical arid zone weaver colony, the large messy stick nests of Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, together with the smaller cylindrical nests of Southern Masked Weaver.

This Lion should not be shot, as it is a protected reserve that forbids shooting. Similarly, the property protects an impressive large mammal fauna; it contains globally significant populations of African elephant (Loxodontha africana) (106,300), black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) (2,135) and wild hunting dog (Lycaon pictus).
