Tell me, what happens if we rip away hunting when hunting protects more wildlife land in Africa than national parks? Conservation is concerned about protecting populations, species, habitats, ecosystems. So now there are lots of lions, and they like buffalo, so now there are less buffalo. And that lions are really cute.

Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. They can be boiled or roasted like potatoes, and they can also be pounded into a flour. That was then. Depending on a visitor’s luck, one can see moose and wolves, hear Boreal Owls or Townsend’s Warblers.

The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. Bigger than the African Buffalo or the American Bison, it is the largest land animal after the Elephant, Rhino, the Hippopotamus and the Giraffe. Good to know.

Her husband was David Sheldrick, the renowned naturalist and founding warden of Tsavo East National Park who died of a heart attack in 1977.
