The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

This years bird number 1300, the Whiskered Screech Owl, was found in the dark, in a snow storm, and no photo was gotten. This entire list could be made up of Costa Rican birds, but one of my favorites to capture was this Chestnut-backed Antbird. We spent a total of 22 days in Costa Rica, with 15 of those days spent truly birding.

Packing for a birding trip

During a week in Costa Rica, I used it only twice. Then, a torch for owling and a headlamp for finding one’s way around the lodge in the dark. Don’t forget all the cables, chargers, backup batteries and international electrical adapters! Normally, I’d take my standard (and lightweight) 8s, plus a scope.

Veraguan Mango – Panama's ex-endemic

In the last few years, birders in Costa Rica started noticing strange mango species in the Golfito/Puntarenas region of the country. The strange birds were identified as Veraguan Mangos and they have now officially been added to the Costa Rican national bird list. have found their way to Costa Rica. Wicked, right?
