This past Saturday, 10 October, was my favorite birding event of the year. Yes, it was the Queens County Bird Club Big Sit, our seventh iteration of the sedentary birding classic. It is a birding challenge where a team of birders stays in one spot for the entire day to see how many species they can record for their location.

Another amazing 10,000 Birds theme week is in the tank. Joining Poop Week , Wood-Warbler Week , Bird Love Week , and other theme weeks lost in the ether, Come@Me Week was an unbridled success, causing arguments, hurt feelings, bar fights, and at least one felony during its week-long run. 1PM – Mike: Lookalike Birds Should Be Lumped.

Bird vocalizations. If I was going out looking for a rarity or even just for a bird that I hadn’t seen (or heard) in awhile I would play the songs and, especially, the chip notes prior to getting into the field to ensure that if the bird called I would recognize it.
