Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see. Decades of trapping for the pet industry drove them to the brink of extinction, and their survival into the future was seriously in doubt. View from 10:18 onwards to see my first glimpse of a juvenile harpy eagle close to Surama village.

The Bat Hawk mainly eats bats, as the name suggests – in a curiously precise statement, Wikipedia claims that 49.3% A Crested Serpent Eagle , looking a bit ridiculous after a rain. He was also nearly strangled by a pet python that he kept. Another “maybe this is” species: a possible Wallaces Hawk-eagle.

With that tragic news went any hopes of finding something like a Crested Eagle or Great Jacamar but it would still be exciting to visit. A delicious surprise and lunch made all the more memorable by the presence of tropical birds, good company, and a wild “pet” tarantula. What still lived there? The damaged forest.
