Before we left home to go camping and birding in the northern area of the Kimberley we had a plan that once we got as far north as the Northern Territory we would return to Halls Creek, Western Australia, via the Duncan Road. Our beatwriter, Duncan , really should go and explore this remote road next time he makes it to Australia!

They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. A housecat in Buenos Aires got its start in Africa, a sheep in Australia to the Middle East, a chicken in Ireland can trace its origin to the jungles of Asia. Rabbits are still an agricultural pest.

Birding around Karratha

Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas. Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. These trains are over 2kms (1 mile) long and over 200 carriages, so we had quite a long wait at the track!
