In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. By tagging the Parrot and monitoring the area with remote cameras, scientists hope to learn more about this species and how to keep it safe. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. The park is the largest botanic garden in Australia and access is free. Wanderer Butterfly.

The beach is in fact named after Captain John Alfred Reddell, who was murdered on 20th October 1899 on board the “Ethel” when he was returning to New Zealand on one of his journeys to transport supplies for the pearl luggers working out of Broome. When going to Australia, one of the two birds I wanted to see most was the Tawny Frogmouth. Gisela Kaplan has written a book about the species, and how they seem unperturbed by humans: “It’s one of their most successful defense strategies. They just sit and pretend not to be there to avoid interaction.”

Although we are still experiencing 30c/86f in the day we have had an overnight temperature of 8c/46f and that is just to all let you know that the tropical north of Australia does have its cold moments and we do sometimes need a layer or two on!
