Our Snow Leopard sat, quite Cheetah-like, before stalking off and once again rolling in the gravel, apparently an indication of the desire to mask its scent before a hunt. We could not believe our fortune, could we really be treated to a Snow Leopard hunt – this was beyond our wildest dreams?

However it is now one of the world’s rarest animals after decades of relentless hunting and poaching. Rhinoceros Beetles are nocturnal and most often found at night when they are attracted to bright lights.

Kinabalu (at 13,455 feet the highest peak in southeast Asia), and human development that has resulted in freshwater rice fields, secondary forest, and oil palm plantations, this means that Borneo offers an incredibly high degree of biodiversity. Borneo, the authors say, is under-birded. I think we need to do something about that.

Contrast this in Asia to, say, Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok, all of which have great birding nearby but are destinations people go to for reasons other than wildlife. Too many highlights, but I have to shout out the Rhinoceros Hornbill as a runner up for my bird of the year last year. Never did see an elephant though). Danum Valley.
