This is not totally animal-related, but I'll share anyway. Today I came across this strange article from NPR about the area. But this article seemed a little over the top to me. On an animal note, I will say that the treatment of animals is very bad in the Central Valley.

A decision not to eat dogs has nothing to do with our inherent hypocrisy, but with our relationship to different animals. Dogs were bred to be companion animals; pigs and cows are raised as food. Foer misses the point of the debate completely. However, I agree with Mr. Foer that factory farming has to go.
