The first three sections are brief, presenting a summary of the bird’s current NYC status (migrant, resident, breeder, vagrant, etc.), The “Literature Cited” section lists the traditional print articles, books, and maps, but doesn’t include items like data sets or rare bird alerts. It’s a very mixed chapter.

The Falcon Thief: A Book Review

It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. wrote a lengthy article in Outside magazine (Jan. 2019), and now this book. Author Joshua Hammer.

Birding Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

The Borneo-endemic Chestnut-crested Yuhina is a cooperative breeder – the vast majority of breeding pairs (97%) in a study conducted here at Mount Kinabalu had helpers. Apparently, in case of extreme drought, these birds (and several other Malaysian species described in an article ) stop breeding as a survival tactic.

To be honest, both the robin and the flycatchers shown above remind me of the easter eggs I hunted for as a child – the same strong colors in front of a green background, same time of the year (feel free to insert your own Proust Madeleine reference here) … Bluethroats apparently are good at imitating other birds.

In the same article, Henry Adams, wildlife management coordinator for Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute, describes the night heron as having “grumpy old geezer energy.” However, the fact that there are 30 subspecies seems to indicate that the species has a slightly overblown estimation of its own importance.
