Sam Lena Park, Tucson, Arizona

In my continuing tour of the many sites for birding here in the Tucson, Arizona area, I have run across the Sam Lena Park, and athletic complex. This winter the waters were consistently holding Ring-neck Ducks, Buffleheads, Northern Shovelers, American Wigeon, Green-wing and Cinnamon Teal, Gadwalls, Ruddy Ducks and Common Mergansers.

Sweetwater Wetlands Park in Tucson, Arizona

When we first landed here in Tucson, Arizona, fate worked her magic, and one of the first people I met was Luke Safford. Luke is a coordinator with the Tucson Audubon Society, and was incredibly helpful with getting my feet on the ground, as far as South East Arizona Birding.

Arivaca Lake- The last stop before Mexico

For most avian migrants heading south towards Mexico, Central and South America, crossing thru the Arizona desert areas can provide very few water, food and resting areas. If they are passing thru Pima County, and the Tucson area, Arivaca Lake is the last stop for water before crossing the US/Mexico border.

Little Big Year – Week 36: Southern New Mexico hotspots.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks. We are now headed to Tucson, Arizona, where we will park the 5th wheel for an extended amount of time, possibly as long as March 1st.

Little Big Year – Week 34: We visit Colorado and Texas

In the past, seeing some of these Ring-necked Ducks would have been rather scarce, so here is a shot of the small group that were on the larger pond. We have been feeling a push to get the 5th wheel down to Tucson, Arizona, which will be our home for the winter, and get prepped for another trip out of the US before the end of the year.
