On Mainstreaming Veganism

Vegans are now on the mainstream's radar, and unlike some vegans, I do care about what goes on in the mainstream. And last night I volunteered at an event benefiting the Office Depot Foundation (which provides backpacks for kids loaded with school essentials, among other things) and someone asked me if there were any vegan desserts!

And it wasn't "vegetarianism" rather than "veganism," as though my husband went from omnivore to vegan overnight, I do understand that most people stop eating flesh first. I didn't have the same urgency in my environmentalism back then, or more accurately it wasn't related to animals.

How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. Most animals in the U.S. Most animals in the U.S.

Spencer R writes: Vegans sound exactly like religious fundamentalists. You can't pull the god card to claim superiority over the rest of us so you demonize the consumption of animal products. Trying to convince people to go vegan is like trying to convince people to only reproduce once. It simply cannot be justified.
