India’s newfound partnership with China on environment issues has yielded results in the area of tiger protection as well. whether it be animal rights or human rights. You can put tigers on a farm for legal parts harvesting and still call it "protection."

Most gallingly of all, I had actually stood next to someone that saw one, jumping into a tree to escape a Tiger of all things, and failed to see it. The other three were the aforementioned Tiger, one of the wildlife sightings of my life, a handful of Bobcats I have seen in California and a small Jungle Cat. What an animal!

This is the usual game viewing routine in reserves of Africa and India. In Africa, no one goes at mid-day because of the heat (making animals lazy and people drowsy). In India, no one goes at mid-day because of the heat and the law. Yes, animals are guaranteed some time free of the camera-snapping crowds.

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. It’s all very well to advocate the should that tigers should not be poached from a reserve in India.

Mosetlha Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). The others follow, some dozen animals in all. They are crossing one or two at a time.

When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects. In Singapore, a Tiger Shrike was observed casting a pellet after eating a large scarab beetle.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).
