People have moved useful plants and animals around with them as long as they had the wit to do so. A housecat in Buenos Aires got its start in Africa, a sheep in Australia to the Middle East, a chicken in Ireland can trace its origin to the jungles of Asia. Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry.

Archaeology has demonstrated that humans were crafting collars for their animals at least 7000 years ago and the possibility that this is a conservative estimate is large. In situations where dogs were primarily guarding domestic animals, collars tended to have studs or spikes to frustrate the jaws of a marauding wolf.
