In Oregon you can’t own any “dangerous” wild animals, but you can get a special permit for a service monkey and anyone can fill their backyard with giraffes. Are we fed up yet?

The festival headquarters is located on the southwest side of Mission Bay, overlooking a marina with nearby Black-crowned Night Herons and frequently plays host to several falcon species, and a short walk to the San Diego River. This makes it a prime spot for bicycle-birding, our niche at the festival.

In other words, the caracara’s behavior is totally different from that of, say, the peregrine, though they’re both falcons, and diverged from each other on their evolutionary paths pretty recently. As Meiburg puts it, Peregrines love solitude, crave routine, and avoid mistakes.

The Hamar women are immediately identifiable by their brick red hair braids, beautiful beaded jewelry and animal skin clothes designed to imitate gazelles. Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.

Now I break (and think that I should put a „I break for birds“ bumper sticker), bins… a falcon! An Eleonora’s Falcon , light morph, makes several circles above the Olive grove and it is gone. Eleonora’s Falcons are migrants themselves. Such a fascinating species.
