The purpose is to make them happier as livestock. Australian scientists have set themselves the challenge of understanding the minds of animals and what they are feeling. A team based at the CSIRO aims to use the study to reduce stress and pain in livestock. The research is being funded by Meat and Livestock Australia.

Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. It would be far better than doing nothing at all.

Despite last year’s agreement with agribusiness interests in Ohio to ban and phase out certain cruel factory farming practices, the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (OLCSB) voted in favor of veal crate confinement. But while the OLCSB tried to go back on their word, animal advocates across the state banded together to say, “no way!”

Clearly a win for the damn livestock industry. A state law mandating "humane treatment" of downed livestock headed for the slaughterhouse was unanimously overturned Monday by the Supreme Court.
