If it steers (sorry about the pun) people toward animals raised in places other than factory farms, where they will still be killed, I'm not thrilled. If more people eat actual food as a result (i.e., less processed food and more fresh, organic fruits, veggies, grains and legumes), than I'm thrilled.

It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. However, the solution they have created, which harkens back to before industrialized agriculture, is simply to still raise animals for their flesh and secretions, and for profit, but to do it the old-fashioned way. No argument here. It's just not right.

The book, which I have not read, that saved Derrick Jensen 's life is called The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability by Lierre Keith, who was a vegan for 20 years, suffered serious medical problems, and started feeling better when she recommenced eating animals. All the friends of my youth were radical, righteous, intense.

The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.

As the lead prosecutor in this case told the jury, this poor infant was not killed by a vegan diet. It is not enough to simply cut animal products (or carbohydrates, or calories) out of one’s diet. He was starved to death by parents who did not give him breast milk, soy-based infant formula or enough food of any kind.
