The Channel Islands have all sorts of species and subspecies that are endemic to the islands, including mammals, reptiles, plants, and of course birds, many of which are nonmigratory. This is the Santa Cruz Island Rufous-crowned Sparrow , a subspecies endemic to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands. They are small and adorable.

While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. Furthermore, with the rapid expansion of oil and gas development in the norther tier states like North Dakota, birds like Sprague’s Pipit and Baird’s Sparrow become more at risk. Not too bad eatin’, huh?

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism. It may be as simple as trying to hit the big white one.

They are all wonderful people and they are all animal lovers. But I’ve learned we love animals in very different ways. And if a feral cat colony is near an endangered species, the colony should be eliminated. I come from a large family: five sisters, two brothers and almost everyone has kids.
