Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. The fatality is one in a string of animal deaths in recent years. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs. In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti.

People also say that hyraxes are elephants, but they are so distant in their relationship that it is little different than saying that deer are a type of pronghorn antelope. It is much stranger and illustrative of the ways of evolution to point out that whales are a form of “hoofed animal&# (unlikely but true).

They breed in dense colonies, incubate their single egg on the feet, and take more than a year to fledge a chick. Southern Elephant Seals and Weddell Seals are also resident, though not in such large numbers. There are eleven types of plant habitats, including Bog, Mire, and four kinds of grasslands.
