Ruppy the glowing puppy

4 The Love Of Animals

The worlds’ first transgenic dog, Ruppy (short for Ruby Puppy), produces a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light. Ruppy and four other beagles are the first dogs to glow, though the experiment has taken place in other animals. They do their work at the Seoul National University in South Korea.

I started calling her, patting my knees (much like you’d call a dog, for gawd’s sake), “Sophie! We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. I still think about and worry about so many of the animals I’ve worked with.

Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery. You've probably heard the word "euthanasia" applied to dog pounds. I'm not saying it's wrong to put such animals to death.
