The Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica has a rich history as a birding-friendly eco-lodge. These researchers preferred this property for their research due to its close proximity to the Arenal Volcano and resplendent natural environment.

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. We are tired… but we will trudge on a bit longer.

Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. 2012 was one of my best years for birding in Costa Rica. I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species.

Some odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are included in Costa Rica nature guides, but there are hundreds of these beautiful creatures flying around the diverse habitats of Costa Rican and there has not been a guide devoted just to them till now. Still, I have been stuck trying to identify a dragonfly I photographed in 2010.

While studying, he also worked on various conservation/research projects (parrots, wagtails, vultures, and anything else that flew) and ringed thousands of birds. Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.

Now this, might not sound like anything of particular ground-breaking significance, but in the context of animal personality research, it is a fairly big thing. Whilst working on Scarlet Macaws in Costa Rica , I had the pleasure of having Katherine Herbourn assist with some of the field work we were doing.
