It is technically correct, and recently fashionable, to insist that any living animal is a member of the larger group that contains it phylogenetically, i.e., ancestrally, with that group often named after the known animal that roots the tree. Meanwhile I have a few random thoughts. Whales are cows. So, for example, humans are apes.

This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version. Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. Bringing animals that would require feed and water at that early stage would have been unwise.

Finishing the cattle on grass is a far “greener” method. But the leaner meat from grass-fed animals actually tastes richer and more savory. To the Editor: Missing from your article was mention of deleterious environmental and health effects resulting from intensive animal farming in addition to global warming.

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” The Amur Leopard ( Panthera pardus orientalis – above) is just one majestic animal on the Critically Endangered (CR) list with less than 100 individuals in the wild due to hunting for its fur.
