The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.)

Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. This concession was to avoid a November ballot vote a la California's Proposition 2.

Here is a Los Angeles Times story about California's Proposition 2, which passed yesterday. On the one hand, it improves the lives of many farm animals. In the long run, measures such as this may make things worse for farm animals. I'm ambivalent about the proposition.

I don't support the destruction of property or any physical threats against people who harm animals whether through medical testing or through conventional agriculture. And, this happened in Fresno County which is in the San Joaquin Valley of California. I grew up there. Believe me, they are NOT helping their cause at all.
