Columbian Black-tailed Deer Odocoileus hemionus columbianus

The Black-tailed Deer , or, in this case, the Columbian Black-tailed Deer , is not a full species, but one of two black-tailed subspecies of Mule Deer.* Though morphologically distinguishable from other subspecies of Mule Deer it is not a species in and of itself. We saw Black-tailed Deer walking through parking lots.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Pronghorn Antelope populations once exceeded 30 million animals, but by the turn of the century, was down to just a few small bands. The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915.

Winter Wanderland

Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura. My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. This is a simple grey and black bird but I have always wanted to see one.
