Over $100 million went to medical research while about $1 million went to animal welfare causes. Actually, less than $1 million dollars went to animal welfare because a portion went to guide dog associations and that is human welfare as far as I’m concerned.) It’s more money for medical research.

This became clear from a report addressed at the European Parliament (EP) session on May 5–7, which seeks to vote on a directive concerning animal research. My personal philosophy is that millions of animals shouldn't suffer on anyone's behalf, especially when they do so against their will.

Actually, I didn't quit neuroscience as a result of the experiences described, but I did quit working with animals. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans. But that's neither here nor there -- I'm very supportive of animal research in principle. Maybe on paper. And for what?
