Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. We have several quail-dove species in Costa Rica, this one is only found in cloud forest here and in western Panama. It does range into western Panama but is far from easy there (nor in Costa Rica for that matter).

This does not include the various changes made to Latin names, taxonomic ordering, nor changes to families.: Split from birds in northern Central America (the White-faced Ground-Sparrow ), the Cabanis’s becomes a very special bird. Once upon a time, it was lumped with the Masked Yellowthroat of South America.

I’m focusing on Turkey Vultures here because they are undoubtedly the species most birders in North America (the home of 10kB) are most familiar with, but the name vulture applies to birds found around the globe. The conservation need is urgent: great attention has rightly been paid to Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest but not enough resources have gone to the Pantanal and the Cerrado, of which only 4% and 5%, respectively, are protected. Each family of birds has a short introductory paragraph and most genera get a sentence or two of description.

Given such limited geographical dimensions, one might be tempted to assume that Central America is pretty much the same, that the region is fairly homogenous in a number of ways. The Rufous-collared Robin is one of those birds.
