For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California. I don’t think I have added any new species, but I did add Alaska, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the group state list. Naturally, a walk through one’s life lists triggers memories.

the same few states always come to mind first…Alaska, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, CA. On the coast Leach’s Storm-Petrels and Tufted Puffins nest on a few select seastacks, and in winter Harlequin Ducks and Rock Sandpipers can be reliably found in a couple of spots. Half Moon Bay, CA.

I love puffins. Before my trip to Washington the only species of puffin I had ever seen in the wild was the puffin of the Atlantic Ocean, the appropriately named Atlantic Puffin. At $55 a head, and free for toddler Desi, the chance to see puffins from a comfortable boat seemed too good to ignore.

Jason broke new ground in Alaska, adding Marbled Murrulet and bringing the Upper 1 to 1. Tufted Puffin – Fratercula cirrhata. Atlantic Puffin – Fratercula arctica. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Tuttle Marsh Wildlife Area. Battle Creek Wildlife Area. Still all mainland though. above Socorro.
