Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

Among teak and bamboo thickets, a winding forest road takes us deeper into the enchanted Snake Jungle, but alas, not a Tiger in sight. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe.

Back to the Uvac Dam where a large group of conference participants is leaving the shuttle bus as I stop the car… While I am carefully reversing through the scattered bunch, a lucky few saw the main prize landing at the hilltop vulture restaurant: the huge Cinereous Vulture (or Eurasian Black Vulture)! Alas, I am not among them.

Livingston, and on the dust jacket was a drawing of three Pine Grosbeaks ( Pinicola enucleator ) standing on a cone-bearing tree. More precisely I wanted to learn how to draw wildlife. I guess it’s a gift you either have or you don’t.

I didn’t get back to the hobby until about eight years ago, in the brave new world of digital cameras, field guide apps, digital listing, birders’ chat groups, and yes, blogging. Alas, as the decade progressed, I also saw the site degenerate. When it became too much to bear, I stayed away from Pino Real for 18 months.

Roadside Birding and Flathead Lake

Alas, my hoped-for Tundra Swan did not materialize despite the proximity of Swan River National Wildlife Refuge. Migrants, alas, were not yet much in evidence aside from the Canada Geese (mild climate my foot.) Mammals were mostly represented by Mule Deer and a handful of debatable Elk.
