Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. Next on the agenda was the drive up and over the mountains with time to check for Bare-shanked Screech-Owl and Dusky Nightjar. One down, a few hundred to go and now we didn’t have to swing by a nearby pond to get it.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. Ducks and herons include Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , Squacco and Purple Herons , as well as the Eurasian Spoonbill. Also, with the opening of more hunting seasons i am hopefull that more concerned sportsmen will start an organization along the same grain as Ducks Unlimited to protect and create Sandhill habitat. You don’t even have to have a duck stamp! From July 1 2008-June 30 2009 Ducks Unlimited raised 200.4 Isn’t that neat?

Hybrid dabbling duck , Rieselfelder Münster, Germany. Also high on my list of favourite birds for 2016 is a hybrid dabbling duck whose parentage I have yet to find out. Thanks, Marsh Sandpiper (seen on the right with a redshank on the pic below), your presence was highly appreciated! But … GREAT BUSTARDS!!
