I must be home-sick because last weekend I found myself browsing through my “SASOL Birds of Southern Africa&#. This ruled out some excellent species like Cape Eagle Owl, Violet Wood-hoopoe, African Finfoot and Half-collared Kingfisher and I was still left with 36 species. So I decided to impose a few rules.

I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. We already had South Africa, Zambia and Uganda under our belts, but my clients’ request for the next year came right out of the blue: Ghana! The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.

The Lesser White-fronted Goose is one of the most threatened waterfowl species of the Western Palearctic, with illegal killing being the most important threat globally. How do you find lions in Africa? The water level was very low, exposing the large mudbar dotted with waterfowl in the distance. Lesser White-fronted Geese, of course.

Certainly in recent years, perhaps Ghana’s most sought after bird is the Yellow-headed Picathartes , or maybe the Egyptian Plovers and Pel’s Fishing Owls that can be found if you travel to the arid north of the country visiting the savannah region of Mole National Park and the Bolgatanga region.
