Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. As a result they sometimes even nest in the trees lining the streets of some African towns and villages.

Uganda is seeing a growth in tourism dollars from visits to see its mountain gorillas. The tourism revenue creates an incentive for Uganda to protect the endangered species at the same time that it contributes to human welfare. This is very important. Lets hope it continues to flourish. Lets hope it continues to flourish.

I had planned to do another story today, but my laptop, sick of endless David Attenborough DVDs, Skyrim and searches of birding in South Africa made a break for it and took a swan dive off my bed. You’ll also remember that the caves are also one of the destinations I took my parents to when we toured Uganda. Egyptian Fruit Bats.

There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. They occur in three biogeographic regions; the Neotropic, Afrotropic and Indo-Malaya ecozones, basically tropical South and Central America, Africa south of the Sahara and tropical Asia. The diminutive Tinkerbirds are Africa’s smallest barbets, depicted here is Red-fronted Tinkerbird photographed at Lalibela, Ethiopia.

I was fortunate to have been born and raised in Africa, and although I have traveled extensively around the world, it remains my home and in my blood.
