For several years I lived and birded in the south of Africa , and still have my battered second edition (1997) of the Sasol Birds of Southern Africa, the most trusted local field guide. Before that, while you all know what South Africa is, what exactly is Southern Africa? The calls are sorted by type (song, alarm, etc.)

These areas, as well as being famous for the afore-mentioned near-endemics, are also home to long isolated populations of birds otherwise only found in East Africa to the north and South Africa to the south. Situated slap-bang on the Zim/Mozambique border, this used to be one of the most productive birding sites in the country.

And then I realized: he had waded through the river… On another occasion I found myself in the Chimanimani Mountains on the border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. My Mozambique project concerned Lake Chicamba Real – a big reservoir behind a dam in the River Revué. There were still no tracks to be seen (I double-checked).
