Later the continents broke up into smaller regions such as South America, Africa, Asia and such, an a few smaller pieces like Madagascar and New Zealand as well. To be more specific, the Kiwi descends from a bird that FLEW there from Africa or Madagascar and then became the kiwi. This was on Gondwana.

The Oilbird today lives only in South America, but fossils of similar species are known from Wyoming. I wrote about the Hoatzin here a couple of years ago when Gerald Mayr published a paper hypothesizing that Hoatzins invaded South America from Africa by raft. The story just keeps getting better.

The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. They feed on insects stirred up by the herds, at times sitting on the animal itself picking off ticks and other insects. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis.

It also supports the greatest variety of large mammals in all of South America, including such iconic species as Maned Wolf and Giant Anteater. There are approximately 10,000 plant species in the Cerrado. Low, gnarled forest found along streams had the skulky Brasilia Tapaculo and diminutive Gray-backed Tachuri.
