Since there are many laws and fines against animal cruelty or irresponsible pet ownership, its possible that the man felt this was his only recourse. You can take an ad out online or put the world on various animal forums to find someone willing to adopt your pet. Before abandoning a pet, try to find another home for it.

In other words, I don't immerse myself in animal cruelty. I rescue, I adopt, I do TNR, and I connect others to resources to do the same. I spend plenty of time doing nonprofit work that is unrelated to animals and also doing for-profit work that is unrelated to animals. Because I would have a breakdown. So I take care of myself.

One ought to adopt the best means. One suspects that the SPCA and the American Humane Society have done more to stop cruelty to animals than vegetarians ever could. That these organizations have not gone far enough and that wide areas of animal cruelty still exist does not show that their methods are wrong.
