Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.

Escaped vs Wild Whistling Ducks

They don’t even take their tucked-in heads out, a position some resting ducks adopt, when people approach them to distances of only a few meters. Is this the first record of this species in the region in over a 100 years? White-faced Whistling Ducks are widespread in hot and humid habitats of eastern South America.

The Black Swans were adopted to the trust’s coat of arms and breed here during the northern winter. Strangely, the Indian Peafowl is not mentioned on eBird’s Hotspot list which shows the 67 species that have been seen there. The exotics have now mostly been dispersed to other collections, but a few remain.

August arrived and I was releasing birds knowing they’d need time to adapt prior to making that long flight across the Gulf of Mexico, headed to South America. But lets see … I’d say one of my most memorable releases is that of a Purple Martin , a species of special concern in California.

Hilty’s Birds of Colombia field guide review
