There is a bit of a drama around the adoption of the Portuguese (yay!) Some are saying that President Obama broke his promise to get a rescue dog. Others are accusing him of getting a dog from a breeder. Bo is not really a rescue dog. But he wasn't really adopted from a breeder either. Water Dog puppy Bo.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Would it matter?" This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. That's what I'd like to think. Maybe both.

Save the Planet: Adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life, but it reduces demand for purebred animals, which are more likely to have medical problems due to genetic abnormalities. They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group. But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs.

Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult. Pit Bull Rescue Central (PBRC) is a great resource for pit bull owners and those that find a homeless or lost pit bull. However, any breed of dog that has been abused, neglected, or homeless may be aggressive to humans or other dogs.
