Scores of abandoned dogs, cats and livestock from Utah animal shelters become subjects of laboratory research at the University of Utah each year. University officials say they only collect animals from shelters willing to participate and pound animals are steered toward nonlethal experiments. From the AP.

We chain them, use them for experiments, eat them in some countries and make them wear funny sweaters in others. The most famous example of military dogs is the Vietnam dogs who faithfully served American soldiers and then were abandoned to unknown fates after we left the country.
