I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig. A violation of trust or confidence, an abandonment of something committed to one's charge. There is no question about the motive here: seduce the sheep into believing you care so that they are easier to deal with and easier to lead to slaughter.
