A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Mites will eventually kill the bird. Ok, so you’ve rescued a bird. Unfortunately a bird’s nest location is not always perfect. Putting a baby bird back in its nest is not always the right thing to do.

A recent arrival at the Nairobi nursery was an elephant named Murka, rescued near Tsavo National Park with a spear lodged deep between her eyes and gaping spear and axe wounds along her back and sides. The spear had penetrated ten inches, rupturing her sinuses, which prevented her from using her trunk to drink.

I know about the common mistakes people make when they find young birds, assuming that because they’re on the ground with no other birds in sight they must be abandoned or in need of rescue. It’s impossible to know, of course, but I like to think some of the photos may be my rescue.

I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him. Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon.
