There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. Neither even makes their own nesting cavities; they use the abandoned holes of other woodpeckers. They are literal jinx birds in that their genus name is “ Jynx.”

Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. Our guides were researchers from Callisto, patient and always smiling Yannis Tsanakis (above) and Maria Petridou with her infectious laugh and stories of her Sun Bear and Jaguar research experiences.

The White-backed Woodpecker is the hardest resident woodpecker to find in Europe. So how did I manage to lay eyes on the most difficult-to-see European woodpecker? This means that there were nearly thirty of us making our way up the dirt track past long-abandoned quarries to get the area where the woodpeckers are normally found.

O’Sullivan informs us that a fertile egg is finally produced (not clear if it’s from The Stud or the other male, the Bronx Zoo only has two males) and abandoned and successfully nurtured by a pair of Ring-necked Doves. Is this the type of avian experience we want? On the WCS web page, Ms. What happened to Thelma and Louise?
