Cyprus Delights – Part III

10,000 Birds

I’d really like to see a Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo (South-East Asia), while to see any of the Madagascan couas would be pretty cool (there’s 11 of them). There are 154 species of cuckoos in the world, and they’re all a fascinating bunch. I reckon I’ve seen around 60 or them, which still leaves a lot to go.

10,000 Birds

Apparently, one of the threats to this species comes from the bioaccumulation of mercury in its feathers – though I balked at paying USD 40 for the scientific paper providing the details, from the abstract and the location of the authors, it seems they examined feathers of this bird living in an abandoned mining region in Guiyang, China.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. It provides goals and a definite direction for your birding travels and thoughts; sometimes it even becomes the basis of a book!

Searching for a White-backed Woodpecker

10,000 Birds

Dendrocopos leucotos is absent from western Europe but is found in northern, central, and eastern Europe and across Asia as far east as Japan and Korea. This means that there were nearly thirty of us making our way up the dirt track past long-abandoned quarries to get the area where the woodpeckers are normally found.
