What’s the Next ABA-Countable Exotic?

In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. The ABA Checklist Committee quickly followed suit.

My 2013 Birding Year in Review (With My Top Ten Birding Moments!)

Hopefully I will see at least that many species in 2014! Finally seeing my 300th species in Queens. And what do you think they will be in 2014?

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Mississippi Kite – Ictinia mississippiensis. And Pat gets to keep the awards in the remainder of the categories.

During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. They noted 598 species as a team, bringing the year total to 2118 and pushing the life list to 3555. Mississippi Kite – Ictinia mississippiensis. They are hungry, tired and don’t need to be chased. Claire and Grant went walkabout for 20 FOYs. Jason hoisted his colours in Kansas and claimed the state for 10,000 Birds.
