In a funny twist of fate, it seems that 2014 will be much the same as 2012 and 2013 have been, with family trips to somewhere in France and business trips to Indonesia and Kazakhstan. There are now multiple sites where people can contribute data on window strikes and bird deaths, including NYC Audubon’s dBird , FLAP’s Global Collision Bird Mapper , iNaturalist, and, on a social media level, the Facebook group Dead Birds 4 Science , run by the indefatigable Heidi Trudell. with a median estimate of 599 million.

I reviewed the New Jersey volume in May 2014 and, being in Florida at the moment, I thought this was a good time to take a closer look at both the Florida volume, published just last month, and the Colorado volume, published in June 2014. (I Any more species, and I think beginners would be overwhemed and confused. They are needed.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Let’s take this thought–that some birds should be extinct–and apply it to some actual extinct birds.
